In April the Dental Wellness Cape Town Action Group initiated the first stage of the pilot oral health education programme in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.  On 4th April, 19 teachers and healthcare workers were trained as tooth-brushing supervisors.  The first initial screening of 250 children began on 8th April.  Carried out over 6 months, children will be provided with a toothbrush at school, and will participate in daily supervised tooth brushing sessions.  The objective is to assess whether the programme makes a measurable difference to the oral health of children in the township.  If the pilot programme is successful the plan is to deliver the programme across schools in the region. The project has kindly been sponsored by Colgate SA, who provided 600 toothbrushes and educational resources.
