South Africa 2012 (January)

In January 2012 Dr Greenwall travelled to South Africa. She visited the Khayalitcha Township and the Illitha crèche to hand out toothbrushes for the children and give lessons in basic oral hygiene.

Khayelitsha is one of South Africa’s largest and fastest growing townships. Located in the Western Cape, it is home to around one million inhabitants. With the poor conditions – around 70 percent live in shacks that do not have plumbing or electricity and must walk 200 metres or more to access water – maintaining one’s oral health is not a huge priority among the population. There is only one dental clinic and three health clinics serving the entire population of the township.
